World famous Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) came to Ramsgate in 1876 teaching languages at a private school on Royal Road. Whilst here, he drew pen and ink sketches of the view from his window.
Spencer Square is home to a bust of Van Gogh created by artist Anthony Padgett, that sits in the centre of the garden area that was renamed ‘The Van Gogh Garden Spencer Square’.
In Spencer Square and Royal Road, Ramsgate you will find blue plaques dedicated to Vincent’s time in the town.
If you are interested in finding out more about Van Gogh's time in the town, pick up a copy of the self-guided leaflet 'Following in the footsteps of Vincent van Gogh'.
