The Grange

Heritage and Gardens

* Visiting suspended until further notice *

The influential architect Augustus Pugin built The Grange in 1843 as a family home. He built it to live out his idea of life in a medieval, Catholic community, in buildings executed in the Gothic style of so-called pointed architecture.

Augustus Pugin is regarded as being one of Britain’s most influential architects and designers and to stay here in the home he designed for himself and his family offers a unique chance to step into his colourful and idiosyncratic world.

Augustus Pugin was the designer of the interiors of the Houses of Parliament and of many  very impressive churches and other buildings

Guided tours of the ground floor every Wednesday afternoon at 2pm and 3pm. Places are limited and must be booked in advance. Entry £4. Anyone wishing to visit will need to make an appointment. To book a place on a Wednesday tour, please contact The Landmark Trust on 01628 825925 (Mon-Fri 9am-5.30pm)

There is also a small exhibition in the Cartoon Room, a separate building next to The Grange, which provides information about the building, its history and the Pugin family. The Cartoon Room is open on Wednesday afternoons from 2pm - 4pm or by appointment. Entry to the room is free of charge and does not include the house

Have you spotted the digital plaque about Augustus Pugin located close to The Grange?

Access Information

The entrance is level and wheelchair-accessible, although there is stony and cobbled ground in the courtyard. Only the ground floor of the building is wheelchair-accessible; access to the upper floor is by staircase, and these become increasingly steep and narrow as they near the top of the building.

Information boards and written materials are available to view in a ground floor reception room, where seating is also provided. Please telephone for information about alternative formats, special tours, etc.

There is one ground floor accessible toilet close to the entrance.

There are no reserved parking spaces for The Grange, but there is parking along Royal Esplanade which starts less than 50 metres away.
